SMILE HOUSE PISA
The Smile House Centre in Pisa handles the diagnosis and multidisciplinary treatment of cleft lip and palate and congenital malformations affecting the face. The centre operates as a specialised care pathway within the Plastic Surgery Unit of the Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria Pisana.
History
The Centre boasts a tradition dating back to the late 1960s thanks to the work of Prof. Santoni-Rugiu, the first Italian plastic surgeon. This legacy was carried on for thirty years by Prof. Alessandro Massei. In 2014, the multidisciplinary clinic was inaugurated, designed to follow patients and their families from the prenatal stage through to adulthood, followed in 2016 by the opening of an inpatient ward with 10 beds entirely dedicated to this purpose. Each year the Centre welcomes over 100 new patients, 75% of whom come from outside the Tuscany region.
Clinical Coordinator: Dr Gian Luca Gatti
Scientific Coordinator: Dr Alessandro Giacomina
Activities
The Centre is a point of reference for the care and treatment of children and adults born with facial malformations. The team of specialists creates a personalised care pathway that begins with prenatal diagnosis and accompanies the patient and their family through every stage of growth. The Centre’s fundamental aim is not only to restore function and harmony to the face, but to foster the full integration of patients into social life.
