The excellence of this Centre is rooted in a great legacy: the expertise developed in craniofacial surgery from 1969 onwards by Prof. Ernesto Caronni, a pioneer of the discipline in Italy. This solid scientific foundation has made it possible to bring together a team of highly qualified specialists who now provide treatment and follow-up to more than 1,600 patients affected by rare malformative conditions. The facility is an active part of the European Reference Network (ERN), collaborating with the leading specialist centres at European level.

Patient care begins as early as the prenatal stage, through consultations carried out in synergy with gynaecology specialists, and continues with outpatient assessments and hospital admissions throughout the growth period. The team handles the diagnostic and surgical assessment of complex conditions such as cleft lip and palate, craniosynostosis and rare syndromes (Crouzon, Apert, Pfeiffer, Franceschetti). The Centre’s activities extend to reconstructive and oncological surgery of the face and mouth, the correction of dysmorphisms and the treatment of craniofacial trauma. In addition, the Centre carries out outpatient activity for the treatment of all conditions of the oral cavity, jaws and facial skin.

The Centre uses cutting-edge technology to make surgical procedures ever safer and more precise, such as the 3D-4K exoscope and advanced surgical navigation systems.
In addition:

• It offers every type of specialist clinical assessment, to ensure a complete and tailored evaluation for each patient.
• It allows all necessary radiological and instrumental investigations to be carried out on site, thanks to close collaboration with the diagnostic departments of the Fondazione IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori.
• It ensures comprehensive care that includes the cranio-facial orthopaedics and orthodontics clinic and integrated speech therapy support.
